A Letter of Sponsorship is a formal document written by an Indonesian-based individual or company stating that they are willing to support, supervise, and take responsibility for a foreigner during their stay in Indonesia.
This letter helps Indonesian Immigration confirm the purpose of visit, credibility of the sponsor, and ensure that the applicant will follow Indonesian laws and leave or extend their stay legally.
Before you prepare a sponsorship letter, make sure whether your visa type requires a Letter of Sponsorship (LOS) or a Letter of Guarantee (LOG), both documents are often confused but serve different purposes.

Do All Indonesia Visas Require Sponsors?
No. Only some Indonesian visas require a sponsor, while others can be obtained independently.
Visas that require a sponsor:
Business visas, C1/211A visit visas, Golden Visas, student/research visas, journalist visas, retirement visas, work visas (KITAS), and most long-stay permits. These must be backed by an Indonesian citizen, company, university, media agency, or approved travel bureau.
Note for C1/211A:
Some nationalities are allowed to apply for the C1/211A Visit Visa independently, while others must apply through an Indonesian sponsor. Requirements vary by nationality and embassy rules, so always check the latest guidelines before applying.
Visas that don’t require a sponsor:
Tourist entry types such as VOA, e-VOA, and visa-free entry (for eligible nationalities).
If you want to check whether your nationality qualifies for e-VOA, you can see the full list of eVOA Countries.
Who Can Be Sponsors for My Indonesian Visa?
Indonesia only accepts local sponsors, people or organizations based inside Indonesia who are willing and eligible to take responsibility for your stay. Below are the three main categories recognized by immigration, explained clearly and based on official requirements.
1. Indonesian Citizens (Individuals)
An Indonesian citizen (WNI) can sponsor certain types of short- and medium-term visit visas, especially when the purpose is family, social, or personal.
Typical examples include:
- Visiting relatives
- Visiting an Indonesian partner
- Staying with friends/family
- Social or cultural trips
The individual must:
- Have a valid KTP (Indonesian ID)
- Provide their address and contact details
- Be willing to take legal responsibility as a sponsor
This is the most common type of sponsor for social/family visit visas.
2. Schools, Universities, and Educational Institutions
For study- or research-related stays, an Indonesian educational institution can act as your sponsor.
This applies to visas such as:
- Student visas (C316)
- Internship or academic research visas
- Exchange or training programs
In these cases, the school or university issues the official Letter of Sponsorship confirming:
- Your enrollment or participation
- Duration of study/research
- Their institutional responsibility for your presence in Indonesia
Immigration and Indonesian embassies worldwide commonly require this letter as a core document.
3. Indonesian Companies and Legal Entities
An Indonesian PT company, foundation (yayasan), association, or other legal entity can sponsor a wide range of visas, including:
- C1/211A Visa
- Work Visa / KITAS
- Investor Visa
- Journalist/Media Visas
- Retirement and long-stay visas (depending on the category)
Corporate sponsors must provide documents such as:
- NIB / SIUP (business registration number)
- NPWP (tax number)
- Company address, contacts, and authorized signature
This type of sponsorship is required for anyone coming to Indonesia for business, employment, events, research, or long-term purposes.

Extra Tips for Smoother Letter of Sponsorship Preparation
Bring the Right Documents
Make sure you attach all the documents that immigration or the embassy usually asks for, such as:
- Sponsor’s ID (KTP) or company documents (NIB/SIUP, NPWP)
- Applicant’s passport
- Proof of address and contact details
- Check that all names, dates, and passport numbers match your visa application exactly. Even small mistakes can cause delays.
Follow the Embassy’s Instructions
Every Indonesian embassy can have slightly different rules. Some may ask for:
- Original signatures
- Company letterhead and stamps
- Translations
- Extra supporting documents
Update: Indonesia now uses the unified eVisa system (replacing the old Molina platform).
Be Careful When Choosing a Sponsor
Picking the wrong sponsor can cause serious problems:
- Legal issues: Indonesian law makes the sponsor responsible for the visitor’s activities. Fake or unqualified sponsors can face penalties.
- Visa rejection or cancellation: If the sponsor is not eligible, your visa may be refused, canceled, or you could be deported.
- Slow processing: Inexperienced sponsors often submit incorrect letters or missing documents, leading to long delays.
That’s why it’s important to choose a trusted and experienced sponsor, someone who understands immigration rules and can prepare everything correctly from the start.
