Guide to Indonesia’s Bridging Visa: Onshore Transition Permit Explained

Guide to Indonesia’s Bridging Visa

A Bridging Visa is a 60-day onshore visa that allows foreigners already in Indonesia to stay legally while transitioning from one visa or residence permit to another.

It is designed for situations where your current VOA, KITAS, or KITAP is about to expire but your new visa application is still in process.

The Bridging Visa prevents overstaying, removes the need to leave Indonesia, and ensures you remain legally covered during the entire transition.

⚠️ Important Information (Please Read Carefully)

  • Applications must be submitted at least 6 working days before your current visa or stay permit expires.
  • A bridging visa is commonly used to convert a VOA, Single Entry Visa, or Multiple Entry Visa into an ITAS/KITAS while remaining in Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia.
  • A Bridging Visa does not extend your stay by itself, it must be applied for together with the new KITAS or status change application.

Requirements for Bridging Visa

From Applicant

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months)
  • Recent color photo
  • Valid current permit: e-VOA / e-ITAS / e-ITAP

  • Permanent Stay Permit (ITAP / KITAP)

Those waiting for:

  • Change of status (e.g., VOA → KITAS)
  • KITAS extension still under process
  • Changing job sponsor or KITAS type
  • Switching from KITAS/KITAP to another long-stay visa

Foreigners applying for long-term residence options such as KITAP or Indonesia’s Golden Visa may require a Bridging Visa while their new permit is being processed.

  • Valid for 60 days, no extension
  • Only valid onshore (you must be in Indonesia)
  • Automatically void if you leave Indonesia
  • Protects you from overstaying while your new visa is in process
  • Allows you to remain legally even if your new permit is approved after your old one expires (as long as you applied on time)

Common Situations Where Bridging Visa Is Used

A Bridging Visa is used when your current stay permit is ending but your next visa or KITAS/KITAP is still being processed. It lets you stay legally while converting visas, changing sponsors, or waiting for extensions or upgrades to be approved, without leaving Indonesia or risking overstay.

  • VOA → Work KITAS (including Remote Worker ITAS)
  • VOA → Spouse KITAS
  • KITAS Investor → KITAS Work / Investor ITAS
  • KITAS → KITAP application
  • Switching companies (changing work sponsor)
  • Expired KITAS extension still under review
