Entered Bali Visa-Free? Why Your Stay Cannot Be Extended

White 30-day calendar with a prohibition symbol, visa document and Bali map on blue for non-extendable Bali visa-free entry.

If you entered Indonesia using the 30-day Visa-Free Entry facility (Bebas Visa Kunjungan or BVK), you cannot extend that stay for another 30 days through the regular visa extension process. Unlike a Visa on Arrival (VOA), visa-free entry is non-extendable.

This means that even if your nationality is eligible for a Visa on Arrival, you cannot automatically obtain a VOA extension if you originally entered Indonesia using the visa-free facility.

If you have already purchased a visa extension and later discover that your entry permission is not eligible, contact Visa BaliEasy before submitting another application. Our team can help identify your actual immigration status, review your order, and explain the available next steps.

Visa-Free Entry vs. Visa on Arrival in Indonesia

Visa-Free Entry and Visa on Arrival are different immigration permissions, even though both initially allow a stay of up to 30 days.

Entry permission Initial stay Extension allowed
Visa-Free Entry (BVK/A1) Up to 30 days No
Visa on Arrival (VOA/B1) 30 days Once, for another 30 days
Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA/B1) 30 days Once, for another 30 days

According to the official Immigration guidance on Visa-Free Entry, the standard 30-day stay is non-extendable. Visa-free entry is generally granted without an Indonesian visa application fee to eligible travelers at an authorized immigration checkpoint.

A VOA, on the other hand, requires the applicable visa payment and grants a stay permit that can be extended once, subject to immigration requirements.

The distinction matters because extension eligibility is determined by the entry permission actually granted, not simply by your nationality or the number of days you were initially allowed to stay.

For example, a Malaysian traveler may be eligible for both visa-free entry and a VOA.

If that traveler enters Indonesia using visa-free entry, the stay is not extendable, even though the same passport nationality may qualify for a paid VOA on a future visit.

Confirming Your Actual Entry Permission

Before purchasing a visa extension, check which immigration permission you used when entering Indonesia.

Do not rely only on your passport nationality or the fact that you received a 30-day stay.

Start with the following information:

  1. Your entry record: Check the entry permission issued when you passed Indonesian Immigration.
  2. Visa category: Identify whether the record shows Visa-Free Entry (commonly A1) or Visa on Arrival (B1).
  3. Your eVOA document: If you purchased an eVOA before traveling, check the issued visa and its corresponding entry record.
  4. Your permitted stay expiry: Confirm the final date you are authorized to remain in Indonesia.

The appearance and availability of electronic immigration records may vary. If you cannot clearly identify your entry category, ask Immigration or Visa BaliEasy to review the information before paying for an extension.

A passport stamp or a 30-day stay period alone may not provide enough information to determine extension eligibility. If you cannot locate the supporting record, follow our guide to finding your eVOA or current stay permit before requesting an eligibility review.

Visa-Free Eligibility Does Not Mean You Used a VOA

Some travelers assume they entered on a VOA because their nationality appears on the list of countries eligible for Visa on Arrival.

However, being eligible for a VOA is not the same as actually receiving one.

Your nationality may qualify for several entry arrangements, but the immigration permission used for your current visit determines which extension procedures are available.

Steps to Take After Purchasing the Wrong Visa Extension

If you already paid for a VOA extension but entered Indonesia visa-free, do not continue submitting documents under the assumption that the application can be processed normally.

1. Check Your Order and Entry Record

Find your Visa BaliEasy order confirmation and confirm which extension service you purchased.

Review your original entry details and current stay expiry date.

2. Contact Visa BaliEasy Before Applying Again

Contact Visa BaliEasy to review your entry permission and explain that you may have entered using visa-free permission rather than a VOA.

If the entry category has not been confirmed, our team can review the available documentation and help identify what needs to be verified.

3. Request an Eligibility Assessment

If your entry is confirmed as Visa-Free Entry, the standard VOA extension service cannot be used to add another 30 days.

Our team can explain the relevant immigration restrictions and review whether any other lawful option requires assessment by the appropriate authorities.

Do not assume you can simply purchase a VOA while already in Indonesia to replace your visa-free entry.

4. Review Your Order Cancellation or Refund Eligibility

If the extension service cannot proceed because your immigration status is not eligible, request a review of your order.

Whether a cancellation, service adjustment, or refund is available depends on the processing stage and applicable BaliEasy service terms.

A request to cancel a service is not itself a change to your immigration status.

If the service covers more than one applicant, identify each applicant whose order needs review.

A Real Customer Inquiry Received by Visa BaliEasy

Visa BaliEasy has received customer inquiries involving travelers who purchased visa extension services before their actual entry permission was confirmed.

In one case, the customer was informed that their visa-free entry could not be processed through the extension service they had purchased.

These examples do not establish an automatic refund entitlement. Each order must be reviewed under the applicable service terms and its processing stage.

These inquiries highlight a common misunderstanding: travelers may describe their entry permission as a “visa on arrival” without realizing that their actual immigration record shows a different category.

Confirming the entry permission early can prevent an ineligible extension application, unnecessary document submissions, and avoidable delays.

Options When Your Visa-Free Stay Is About to Expire

If you entered Indonesia using Visa-Free Entry, the standard 30-day stay cannot be extended.

Your next steps depend on your remaining permitted stay, travel plans, and any exceptional circumstances that require direct immigration assessment.

Leave Indonesia Before Your Stay Expires

For a normal visa-free tourist visit without another lawful basis to remain, you should arrange to leave Indonesia before your permitted stay expires.

Changing your accommodation, booking an extension service, or purchasing a new visa application does not automatically extend your current stay.

If you have an urgent immigration issue, contact the appropriate Immigration Office before your expiry date.

Apply for an Appropriate Visa for a Future Visit

If you want to return to Indonesia for a longer holiday, check which visa category is suitable before your next arrival.

For eligible travelers, a B1 eVOA provides an initial 30-day stay and can be extended once for an additional 30 days.

Visa BaliEasy services:

For eligible travelers who intend to stay longer for tourism, a C1 Single Entry Tourist Visa may be more appropriate. It generally provides an initial stay of 60 days, with the possibility of approved extensions up to a total of 180 days.

These are options to consider for an appropriate future entry, not automatic ways to extend your existing visa-free permission while remaining in Indonesia.

Avoid Assuming a Visa Run Guarantees Re-Entry

Some travelers consider leaving Indonesia briefly and returning to obtain another stay period.

However, leaving the country does not guarantee that you will be admitted again, even if your passport is eligible for visa-free entry or VOA.

Each arrival remains subject to Indonesian Immigration’s entry assessment.

Avoiding Overstay After an Ineligible Extension Application

If your visa-free stay is approaching expiry, do not assume that an extension order submitted to a visa agent gives you additional time in Indonesia.

A purchase confirmation, document upload, or pending eligibility assessment does not itself change your authorized stay period.

Overstaying can result in fines and additional immigration consequences. Read our Indonesia overstay guide to understand the risks and why you should resolve your status promptly.

If your current permission has already expired, contact the responsible Immigration Office promptly to understand your status and the lawful steps required.

Do not rely on a pending refund or cancellation request as permission to remain in Indonesia.
