Yes, KITAP holders can move to a different residential address in Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia. However, if you change your main residence, you must report the change to Indonesian Immigration through a procedure called Mutasi Alamat (address mutation). This applies even when moving within the jurisdiction of the same immigration office.
Under Article 71 of Indonesia’s Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011, foreign nationals must report changes to their residential address. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to update your foreigner electronic ID card (KTP-el) and Family Card (Kartu Keluarga or KK) through the local Civil Registration Office (Dukcapil).
Changing your residential address does not automatically cancel your KITAP or require you to apply for a new permanent stay permit.
When Do KITAP Holders Need to Report an Address Change?
A KITAP, also known as an ITAP (Izin Tinggal Tetap), is a Permanent Stay Permit that allows eligible foreign nationals to reside in Indonesia.
You should arrange an address update when:
- Moving permanently from one house or villa to another
- Relocating from Canggu to Ubud, Denpasar, or another area in Bali
- Moving from Bali to Jakarta or another province
- Changing your primary residential address after your KITAP was issued
- Moving into a newly purchased or rented property that becomes your main residence
A temporary hotel stay, holiday, or short visit to another city is not necessarily considered a change of permanent residence.
However, if your primary residential address changes, you should report it promptly rather than waiting until your next KITAP renewal or administrative appointment.
Required Documents for KITAP Address Change
According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, the general documents for Mutasi Alamat include:
- Application letter from the sponsor — A formal request to update the foreign national’s residential address. If you move between immigration office jurisdictions, two application letters may be required.
- Sponsor’s identification (KTP) — A copy of the sponsor’s Indonesian identity card, where applicable.
- Passport biodata page — A clear color scan of the KITAP holder’s passport.
- Latest stay permit information — A copy of the most recent immigration stay permit record.
- Valid KITAP/ITAP — Your current Permanent Stay Permit.
- eVisa document — The relevant visa document associated with your immigration status.
- Certificate of Domicile (Surat Keterangan Domisili) — Issued at least at the Banjar or Kelurahan level, according to the immigration office’s requirements.
Additional documents may be required depending on your KITAP category, sponsor, and destination immigration office.
Additional Documents for Spouse or Family KITAP
If you hold a KITAP through marriage to an Indonesian citizen, you may also need:
- Marriage certificate or marriage book
- Indonesian spouse’s KTP
- Indonesian spouse’s Family Card (KK), if requested
- Certificate of domicile for your Indonesian spouse
- Passport and stay permit of a foreign family member, where relevant
- Birth certificate for dependent children, where applicable
If your Indonesian spouse’s KTP still shows an old address or a different city, the immigration office may request additional proof of domicile or supporting documents.
Prepare clear color scans of the original documents. Incomplete or inconsistent information may delay verification.
Step-by-Step KITAP Address Change Process
1. Confirm Your New Residential Address
Prepare your complete new residential address, including the street name, property number, village, district, city or regency, province, and postal code.
Confirm which immigration office has jurisdiction over your new residence.
In Bali, immigration office jurisdiction depends on your residential location. Before applying, check how to choose the correct immigration office for your Bali address so you can determine whether your move requires a local update or an inter-office transfer.
2. Inform Your Sponsor or Responsible Party
If your KITAP has an Indonesian spouse, company, or another registered sponsor, notify them about your change of address.
Your sponsor may need to prepare an application letter and supporting documents.
If your sponsor is preparing the paperwork, review our guide to Indonesian sponsorship letters for the usual sponsor and applicant information, then follow the specific letter instructions issued for your KITAP address-change application.
For KITAP categories with different sponsorship arrangements, check the appropriate application procedure with immigration before submitting.
3. Prepare and Submit the Application
According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, the Mutasi Alamat procedure generally involves:
- Accessing the relevant guarantor account at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
- Submitting the address change application.
- Uploading the required supporting documents.
- Entering your new residential address.
- Waiting for immigration verification.
- Receiving confirmation or the updated immigration record after approval.
If the application status shows “Pending” or “Reject,” check the registration number to identify the reason and follow the instructions provided by immigration.
4. Complete the Address Update
Once immigration approves the application, keep the updated immigration document or confirmation for your records.
If your KITAP is registered under a different immigration office because you moved to another jurisdiction, additional transfer procedures may apply.
You should also review whether your civil registration documents need to be updated through Dukcapil.
Moving Within the Same Immigration Office vs. Moving to Another Jurisdiction
The address change procedure depends on whether your old and new residences fall under the same immigration office.
Moving Within the Same Immigration Office
If your new residence falls within the same immigration office jurisdiction, you generally only need to complete a local Mutasi Alamat.
For example, moving between two residential addresses in Canggu may remain within the same immigration office jurisdiction.
You still need to report your new address, but a transfer between immigration offices is generally unnecessary.
Moving to Another Immigration Office Jurisdiction
If your new residence is under a different immigration office, you may need to complete two procedures:
- Mutasi Keluar (Transfer Out): Transferring your immigration records from the previous immigration office.
- Mutasi Masuk (Transfer In): Registering your immigration records with the immigration office responsible for your new address.
For example, moving permanently from Bali to Jakarta generally requires coordination between immigration offices.
The original and destination offices may require separate application letters and supporting documents.
Once the transfer is completed, future immigration administration should generally be handled by the immigration office responsible for your new residential address.
After confirming the responsible office, use our Bali immigration office directory to plan your visit and reconfirm the current office location and service hours before travelling.
Updating Your KTP and Family Card After Moving
KITAP holders should also check their civil registration documents after changing their residential address.
Unlike KITAS holders, who generally use a Temporary Residence Certificate (SKTT), eligible KITAP holders can obtain an Indonesian electronic ID card for foreign nationals (KTP-el WNA).
If you previously held a KITAS, read our SKTT and domicile-document guide to understand how those documents differ from the civil-registration records relevant to a KITAP holder. Confirm your KTP-el and KK update requirements directly with Dukcapil.
If you move permanently, you may need to update your KTP-el and Family Card (KK) through the local Population and Civil Registration Office (Dukcapil).
Depending on whether you move within the same city or to another city or province, the process may require:
- Existing KTP-el WNA
- Family Card (KK)
- Valid passport and KITAP
- Moving certificate (Surat Keterangan Pindah), where applicable
- Supporting documents confirming the change of residence
Updating your immigration address and updating your Dukcapil records are separate administrative processes.
Make sure the address information across your immigration records, KTP-el, and Family Card is consistent.
Does Changing Your Address Affect Your KITAP Validity?
Changing your residential address does not automatically invalidate your KITAP.
You generally do not need to apply for a new KITAP solely because you move to another house, city, or province.
However, you must continue to comply with the conditions of your permanent stay permit and complete any required address reporting.
Changing your residential address is also different from changing your sponsor, marital status, employment, or other information that may affect your immigration status.
For example, if you hold a spouse-sponsored KITAP and your marital circumstances change, additional immigration requirements may apply beyond updating your address.
Processing Time and Fees
The processing time for a KITAP address change depends on the immigration office, document completeness, and whether the application involves a local address update or a transfer between immigration offices.
A local address change is generally less complicated than an inter-office transfer.
Some immigration offices, including Batam Immigration in its published Mutasi Alamat guidance, list address mutation without a separate government service fee. Confirm the applicable requirements and charges with the office responsible for your case.
Agency handling fees, document preparation, and additional administrative costs may apply.
Visa BaliEasy can help review your case and provide an estimated processing time and service fee before proceeding.
