Important Massive Changes to Bali’s Visa Requirements for Travelers

Indonesia has introduced a new hybrid visa extension system requiring all travelers in Bali, including VoA and e-VOA holders, to register online first and then visit an Immigration Office for biometric and document verification. This update replaces the fully online process used in 2024 and comes in response to rising immigration violations. During the appointment, officers may ask basic questions about your stay, and priority service is available for special cases.

Online Registration Now Mandatory

As of 29 May 2025, all visa extension applications, including Visa on Arrival (VoA) and other extendable visas, must now start with online registration.

You must register your extension through the official Indonesian Immigration website, the same platform used for the e-VOA.

This online step is now the first requirement for everyone, with no exceptions.

In-Person Biometric Verification Required

After submitting your online registration, Immigration will issue an appointment at your nearest Immigration Office within about two working days.

During this visit, applicants must complete:

  • Document verification
  • Biometric data collection (photo + fingerprints)
  • A brief interview, if requested

This is a return to the traditional system, replacing the fully online extension method introduced in 2024.

Who Must Follow the New Process

This new hybrid system applies to:

  • Tourists on Visa on Arrival (VoA)
  • e-VOA holders
  • Visitors with extendable visa categories such as C1/211A
  • Long-stay visitors
  • Business and socio-cultural visa holders

In short: anyone extending their visa inside Indonesia must follow the new steps.

Walk-ins are still possible, but Immigration will still require you to follow the same online registration steps before processing your extension.

How the New Hybrid Extension System Works

The process now includes two stages:

1. Online Submission

  • Register your extension via the official Immigration website https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/
  • Choose “extend my visa.”
  • Upload details as requested (passport, personal data).
  • Wait for the appointment schedule.

2. Visit the Immigration Office

  • Bring your passport.
  • Complete biometrics and verification.
  • Expect a short interview about your stay, accommodation, or travel plans.
  • For most applicants, another follow-up visit may be required within two working days.

This hybrid method combines the convenience of the digital system with stricter in-person checks to reduce visa violations.

Priority Service for Special Cases

Immigration now provides a priority one-visit service for applicants who are:

  • Elderly
  • Disabled
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Experiencing emergencies

With this service, all steps (registration, verification, and biometric collection) can be completed in a single visit with assistance from immigration officers.

What to Expect During Immigration Checks

During your biometric appointment, Immigration officers may ask simple questions such as:

  • Why are you staying longer in Indonesia?
  • Where are you staying (hotel / villa address)?
  • Do you have onward travel plans?
  • How will you support yourself during your stay?

No additional documents are officially required, but Immigration may request clarification depending on your situation.

Rising Enforcement Cases in 2024–2025

Immigration reported a significant increase in enforcement cases:

  • 1,610 cases from January–April 2024
  • 2,201 cases from January–April 2025
  • A jump of 36.71%

This surge in violations (overstays, misuse of visas, and unlawful activities) is one of the key reasons Indonesia has strengthened the extension process.

What This Means for Tourists in Bali

For most travelers, the visa extension process remains straightforward, but:

  • You must now register online first
  • You must visit Immigration for biometrics
  • You should prepare for possible interviews
  • You should expect tighter checks and stricter timelines

If you plan to stay in Bali more than 30 days, it’s important to prepare early.

Best Visa Options for Bali Travelers (VoA & e-VOA)

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

  • Available for 97 nationalities
  • Valid 30 days
  • Extendable once for another 30 days
  • Can be purchased at Bali Airport

e-VOA (Online VoA)

  • Same as VOA, but can be purchased online

With the new rules, starting your application early is more important than ever, especially for extensions.
