Changing Hotels or Villas in Bali: Address Rules for Tourist Visa Extensions

White accommodation, location pin, visa document and Bali map on blue for changing hotels or villas in Bali and tourist visa extension address rules.

Yes, you can change hotels, villas, or Airbnb accommodation while visiting Bali on a tourist visa, VOA, or eVOA. You generally do not need a new visa simply because you move from one accommodation to another. However, your accommodation details must remain accurate, and any change that requires immigration reporting must be handled properly.

If you plan to extend your visa, your accommodation address becomes especially important. Indonesian Immigration uses the address and postal code submitted during the extension application to determine the immigration office responsible for your biometric photo and interview appointment.

Visa BaliEasy can help check your accommodation details, confirm the appropriate immigration office, and assist with your visa extension if you are planning to move during your stay.

Moving Between Hotels, Villas, or Airbnb in Bali

Tourists frequently change accommodation while exploring Bali. For example, you may spend a few nights in Seminyak, move to Ubud, and finish your holiday in Uluwatu.

Changing accommodation during a tourist visit does not automatically invalidate your existing visa.

You can generally:

  • Move from one hotel to another.
  • Change villas or Airbnb accommodation.
  • Stay in different areas of Bali during the same trip.
  • Visit other Indonesian destinations, such as Lombok or Jakarta.
  • Change your original travel itinerary after arriving.

However, your activities must remain consistent with your visa purpose, and your stay permit must remain valid.

You should also provide accurate accommodation information when requested by immigration or the accommodation provider.

If you have not arrived yet and your approved visa still shows your original hotel, read what to do when your actual address differs from your Indonesia visa application. That guide covers changes after visa approval; this article focuses on moving between accommodations during your trip and preparing an extension.

Do You Need to Report Every Hotel Change to Immigration?

Checking into a different hotel during a tourist trip is not the same as formally changing your registered residential address.

Tourists generally do not need to submit a formal Mutasi Alamat application every time they change hotels. That procedure is mainly relevant to changes in registered residence, particularly for long-term stay permit holders.

However, Article 71 of Indonesia’s Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011 requires foreign nationals to report changes of address.

For short-term tourists, the distinction between temporary accommodation changes and changes to their actual place of residence is important.

If you are unsure whether your move requires a separate immigration report, particularly during an extended stay or a change of primary residence, check with immigration or your visa agent.

Hotels and Villas Must Report Foreign Guests Through APOA

Under Article 72 of Indonesia’s Immigration Law, accommodation owners and managers have obligations to provide information about foreign guests to immigration authorities.

Indonesia uses the Aplikasi Pelaporan Orang Asing (APOA) to facilitate foreign guest reporting.

This system is intended for accommodation providers, including:

  • Hotels and resorts
  • Villas
  • Guesthouses and homestays
  • Boarding houses
  • Short-term rental properties, including Airbnb-style accommodation

When checking into new accommodation, provide the correct passport and guest information so the owner or manager can complete the applicable reporting requirements.

The official system is available at apoa.imigrasi.go.id.

Accommodation-provider reporting does not automatically replace any separate address-reporting obligation that applies to your circumstances.

What If You Stay at a Private Villa or a Friend’s House?

If you are staying at a privately rented villa, Airbnb, or a friend’s house, you should still be able to provide your actual accommodation address.

For a commercial rental, the property owner or manager should understand the applicable foreign guest reporting requirements.

If you are staying with friends or family, the host may also be required to provide information about your stay when requested by immigration authorities.

Keep the following information available:

  • Full accommodation address
  • Village or Kelurahan
  • District or Kecamatan
  • Postal code
  • Host or property manager’s contact details

This information may also be needed if you later apply for a visa extension.

Changing Accommodation Before Your Visa Extension

If you plan to extend your tourist visa while staying in Bali, check your accommodation arrangements before submitting the extension application.

According to the official guidance from the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, eVOA extension applicants should enter the address of the accommodation where they will stay during the next five days, including the correct postal code.

This matters because the address determines which immigration office will handle your application and biometric appointment.

Example: Moving from Ubud to Canggu

Suppose you entered Bali with an eVOA and initially stayed at a hotel in Ubud.

After three weeks, you decide to move to a villa in Canggu and extend your visa.

When preparing your extension application, use the accurate accommodation details relevant to your upcoming stay rather than automatically copying the hotel address from your original visa application.

Ubud and Canggu generally fall under different immigration office jurisdictions.

An incorrect address or postal code may result in your biometric appointment being assigned to an inappropriate office, which can delay your extension process.

You can read our guide on how to choose the correct immigration office in Bali based on your address.

What If You Move After Submitting Your Visa Extension?

If you have already submitted your visa extension application and then decide to move to another hotel or villa, check whether your move affects your assigned immigration office.

For example:

  1. You apply for an eVOA extension using your villa address in Canggu.
  2. Your application is submitted and payment is completed.
  3. You receive an email with your immigration biometric appointment.
  4. Before the appointment, you move to Ubud.

In this situation, do not assume that you can simply attend a different immigration office closer to your new accommodation.

Your appointment may already be assigned according to the address and postal code submitted in your application.

Contact your visa agent or the assigned immigration office before the appointment to confirm whether any changes are required.

If you applied through Visa BaliEasy, let our team know about your new accommodation so we can review the situation and follow up with the relevant immigration authorities if needed.

Biometric Photo and Interview Requirements for Visa Extensions

Since 29 May 2025, foreign nationals applying for stay permit extensions in Indonesia, including VOA and tourist visa extensions, must attend an immigration office for photo and interview procedures.

Even if your extension application is submitted online, you are still generally required to complete the in-person immigration appointment.

The process may include:

  • Identity and passport verification
  • Biometric photo capture
  • Fingerprint collection
  • Immigration interview
  • Other verification procedures requested by immigration

Your designated office depends on the immigration jurisdiction associated with the accommodation address registered for your extension application.

The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office also instructs eVOA extension applicants to be prepared to attend immigration shortly after payment, making the accuracy of your upcoming accommodation address particularly important.

What If You Cannot Attend Your Appointment?

If your accommodation plans change or you cannot attend the assigned appointment, notify your visa agent or immigration office immediately.

Visa BaliEasy helps coordinate immigration appointments so you know when and where to attend.

If you become sick or cannot attend your scheduled biometric appointment, let us know as soon as possible. Our team can follow up with the relevant immigration authorities to check whether your appointment can be rescheduled.

Rescheduling remains subject to immigration approval.

Visa Extension Options When Staying at Different Locations

Your ability to extend your stay depends on your visa type, not simply on whether you have changed accommodation.

Visa on Arrival (VOA/eVOA)

A VOA or eVOA allows an initial stay of 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days, giving a maximum stay of 60 days.

You can move between hotels or villas during your stay, but use the appropriate accommodation details when applying for your extension.

Visa BaliEasy services:

C1 Single Entry Tourist Visa

A C1 Tourist Visa provides an initial stay of 60 days and can generally be extended twice for another 60 days each, allowing a maximum stay of 180 days.

If you are planning to change accommodation during your extension process, make sure your registered address is accurate and confirm your assigned immigration office.

Visa BaliEasy services:

D1 Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

A D1 Multiple Entry Tourist Visa generally allows an initial stay of 60 days per entry, with up to two approved extensions of 60 days each.

The maximum stay is generally 180 days per entry.

Changing accommodation during your visit does not automatically affect the overall validity of your D1 visa. However, the correct accommodation address remains important when extending your stay.

Tips for Travelers Planning to Stay in Multiple Places in Bali

If you are planning a longer holiday and expect to move between several accommodations, a few simple preparations can help prevent immigration issues.

1. Use genuine accommodation information. When applying for a visa or completing arrival declarations, provide accurate information about your intended stay. Do not use fictitious addresses.

2. Keep your accommodation details available. Save your booking confirmations and full addresses, especially if you are staying at smaller villas or private rentals.

3. Confirm foreign guest reporting at check-in. Provide the required passport information to your accommodation provider.

4. Plan your visa extension around your accommodation schedule. If you intend to extend your stay, consider where you will be staying when the biometric appointment is expected.

5. Check the postal code carefully. Your postal code can affect which immigration office is assigned to your extension application.

6. Start your extension before your stay permit expires. Do not wait until the last day, particularly if you are moving between areas or have limited availability for an immigration appointment.

Changing hotels does not extend your visa or reset your permitted stay period. For overstays of fewer than 60 days, the administrative fine is generally IDR 1,000,000 per day; longer overstays or failure to pay may lead to deportation and entry restrictions.
